timesharing[now primarily historical] Timesharing is the technique of scheduling
a computer's time so that they are shared across multiple tasks and
multiple users, with each user having the illusion that his or her
computation is going on continuously. John McCarthy, the inventor of
LISP, first imagined
this technique in the late 1950s. The first timesharing operating
systems, BBN's "Little Hospital" and CTSS, were
deplayed in 1962-63. The early hacker culture of the 1960s and 1970s grew
up around the first generation of relatively cheap timesharing computers,
notably the DEC 10, 11, and VAX lines. But these
were only cheap in a relative sense; though quite a bit less powerful than
today's personal computers, they had to be shared by dozens or even
hundreds of people each. The early hacker comunities nucleated around
places where it was relatively easy to get access to a timesharing
account.Nowadays, communications bandwidth is usually the most important
constraint on what you can do with your computer. Not so back then;
timesharing machines were often loaded to capacity, and it was not uncommon
for everyone's work to grind to a halt while the machine scheduler
thrashed, trying to figure out what to do next. Early hacker slang
was replete with terms like cycle
crunch and cycle drought
for describing the consequences of too few instructions-per-second spread
among too many users. As GLS has noted, this sort of problem influenced
the tendency of many hackers to work odd schedules. One reason this is worth noting here is to make the point that the
earliest hacker communities were physical, not distributed via networks;
they consisted of hackers who shared a machine and therefore had to deal
with many of the same problems with respect to it. A system crash could
idle dozens of eager programmers, all sitting in the same terminal room and
with little to do but talk with each other until normal operation
resumed.Timesharing moved from being the luxury of a few large universities
runing semi-experimental operating systems to being more generally
available about 1975-76. Hackers in search of more cycles and more control
over their programming environment began to migrate off timesharing
machines and onto what are now called workstations around 1983. It took another ten
years, the development of powerful 32-bit personal micros, the
Great Internet Explosion before the migration was
complete. It is no coincidence that the last stages of this migration
coincided with the development of the first open-source operating
systems.

  • Flange Faces - Raised Face (RF), Flat Face (FF), Ring-Type Joint (RTJ . . .
The Raised Face flange is the most common type used in process plant applications, and is easily to identify It is referred to as a raised face because the gasket surfaces are raised above the bolting circle face
  • Raised Face (RF) vs Flat Face (FF) Flange: Critical Differences . . .
A Raised Face (RF) flange features a sealing surface machined to a specific height above the bolting circle, designed to concentrate clamping force In the Oil Gas and Chemical industries, RF is the default because this concentrated load allows the flange to “bite” into hard, semi-metallic gaskets (like Spiral Wound Gaskets)
  • Types of Flange Faces - FF, RF, RTJ, T G and MF
Male and Female flanges feature a raised portion (male) on one flange face and a corresponding recessed area (female) on the mating flange The male face fits into the female face, providing a tighter, more secure connection
  • Flange Face Types Finish: RF, RTJ, FF, T G, M F
The raised face (RF) is the default flange face per ASME B16 5 for all pressure classes from 150 through 2500 A machined raised ring surrounds the bore, elevating the gasket seating area above the bolt circle
  • The Difference Between a Raised Face and Flat Face Flange
Raised face (RF) flanges are common in process plant applications but can be used in almost all applications They are suitable for use in high and low temperatures and pressures
  • Flange Face Types: RF, FF RTJ Explained by C-Way Exports
Raised Face (RF) is the most widely used flange face type globally It features a small raised surface around the bore where the gasket sits, concentrating the sealing force over a smaller area for a tighter, more efficient seal
  • Flange Face Types: RF vs. FF vs. RTJ Explained -
A Raised Face (RF) flange is the most common type used in process plant applications It is characterized by a small portion of the flange face that is raised above the bolting circle
  • Flange Faces Explained (Flat, Raised, etc) - saVRee
A raised face (RF) flange has circular shaped sealing face that protrudes from the flange’s bolting circle plane Raised face flanges are available in all pressure classes, and thus for a wide range of pressure and temperature ratings
  • RF vs RTJ Flanges Explained: Key Differences - tangovalve. com
A Raised Face (RF) flange is a flange whose sealing surface is elevated above the bolting circle face In other words, the area of the flange around the pipe bore (where the gasket sits) is raised compared to the rest of the face that touches the bolts
  • Flange Face Types: RF, FF, RTJ — When to Use Each
Three face types dominate industrial piping: raised face (RF), flat face (FF), and ring joint (RTJ) This guide explains when to use each and why they matter Raised face is the default face type in ASME B16 5 and the most common in general industrial piping
